Dental Sleep Medicine
What is it and how can it help me?
Dental Sleep Medicine is an area of practice that focuses on the management of sleep-related breathing disorders including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea through the use of oral appliance therapy and upper airway surgery.
The most used oral appliance is the type that advances the lower jaw during sleep MAD: the mandibular advancement device
How it works
The mandible is put more forward, causing the upper airway to widen thereby preventing the collapses eliminating or reducing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
Custom-made
The MAD is preferentially custom made, to exactly fit on your teeth both from the lower and upper jaw. This is a precision job that requires a specialized dentist. It can even be used in patients with an edentulous upper jaw or can be attached to dental implants in both upper and/or lower jaw.
Best advice: prefer a qualified dentist
Some dentists have specialised in this matter and seek to provide the most optimal and advanced treatment possible, in close cooperation with your general physician and/or specialist.
